Jane Johannson Art
I have come realise why I paint and in particular why I paint horses …
The sense of utter freedom and joy I get from riding out in wide open spaces on
my horse Spirit is my way of re-living these magical moments: crossing rivers and valleys in far off places, galloping to where the sea meets the sky, climbing up mountains to wander across moorlands, and gaze at the world beneath our feet.
The physical act of painting is my way of exploring this emotional and visceral connection that we experience with horses: the marks they leave on our hearts, the space they inhabit in our soul and the primal connection they give us to another world.
Inspired my my adventures in the saddle I bring this horse energy to the studio. The work evolves from playing with paint and creating texture on wood panels, and loose charcoal drawings/mark-making/collage followed by oil and cold wax medium to create depth and vibrancy to create contemporary, abstract colourful horse paintings.

This new collection of work entitled ‘GOLDEN ‘ was inspired by a very special horse who was my greatest teacher and brought me to the world of Natural Horsemanship.
All horses are special but this horse quite simply changed my life. She’s the reason I live the life I do… I arranged my life to fit around her. Her energy is in many of these new paintings and as you may have guessed she was a chestnut mare.
